The Silent Handicap
The impact of hyperhidrosis on everyday activities that many people consider routine is profound. This excessive sweating condition is often referred to as "The Silent Handicap," highlighting its significant disruption. It's important to recognise that hyperhidrosis affects more than just sweating. Numerous studies have explored its effects on lifestyle and mental well-being. Additionally, we've gathered valuable insights from anonymous surveys conducted with product users. For more information, please visit our Lifestyle Surveys page.
A Brief Introduction to Hyperhidrosis
Profuse or excessive sweating is a relatively common problem affecting men and women equally. Almost 3% of the population is affected, largely among individuals aged between 25 and 64 years.
What about hyperhidrosis causes? Hyperhidrosis can be inherited, with 30-50% of individuals affected having a positive family history**. This genetic link is supported by a UCLA study suggesting that "sweaty palms syndrome" may be hereditary. Furthermore, another study found that 65% of those with hyperhidrosis reported familial occurrences^. Recently, a team of research scientists identified a gene responsible for palmar hyperhidrosis^^, underscoring the genetic basis of this condition.
* Individuals aged 25 to 64 years represent about 56% of the population (Statistics Canada, cat. no. 96F0030XIE2001002: www.statcan.ca) **Haider, A; Solish N. While 3% may seem like a small percentage, it translates to approximately 400 individuals in a community of 25,000*. Interestingly, palmar hyperhidrosis can begin as early as age 13, while axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis typically starts around age 19. Many patients with palmar hyperhidrosis report that the condition began during childhood.

Prevalence in the U.K. has been reported to be between 1.0 to 1.6% #. However, the number is likely to be underestimated as many individuals do not seek healthcare for the condition.
